FAQs

Is apple wood good for smoking?

Yes. Apple is the mildest and sweetest smoking wood we carry, which makes it one of the easiest to cook with. It suits pork, poultry, and fish especially well, and it is hard to oversmoke with it. Apple wood for smoking is the wood we point beginners toward first.

What does apple wood taste like?

Mild and sweet with a light fruity flavor and none of the sharpness you get from hickory or mesquite. The smoke flavor sits underneath the meat instead of on top of it, which is why it works so well on pork chops, ribs, and chicken.

Is apple wood a hardwood?

It is. Apple is a dense hardwood that burns hotter and longer than its gentle smoke suggests. It builds a solid coal bed and holds a consistent fire through a long cook.

Do you sell apple wood chips, chunks, or pellets?

No. We sell apple as splits, boxes, and cord pallets. Splits give a longer and steadier burn than apple wood chips or chunks, and they are what offset smokers and restaurant pits are built to run.

Can I use apple wood on a gas grill or charcoal grill?

Yes. On a charcoal grill, add an 8 inch split to the coals and let it catch before cooking. On a gas grill, wrap a small split in foil, vent it, and set it over a low burner.

What meat is apple wood best for?

Pork first, then poultry and fish. Pork belly, pork chops, ribs, shoulder, bacon, chicken, turkey, and salmon all take applewood smoke well. It also works on beef when layered over post oak, though most cooks reach for something stronger there.

Can I mix apple with other woods?

Yes, and most pitmasters do. Each type of wood brings something different to the fire. Apple over post oak is the common blend for a long cook. Apple and cherry together give you a double fruit wood profile on poultry. Apple with a single hickory split adds depth without losing the sweet edge.

Is your wood aged or kiln dried?

All of our cooking wood is naturally aged and seasoned in the Texas sun, then heat treated to USDA specification before it ships. That means a minimum interior temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 75 minutes.

What temperature should I smoke with apple wood?

Anywhere from 225 to 275 degrees Fahrenheit covers most of what apple is good for. Pork belly and pork shoulder do well at 250 degrees Fahrenheit, ribs a little lower, and chicken or turkey at the top of that range so the skin renders properly. Apple holds a steady fire across that whole window, and a brown sugar rub will set into bark rather than scorch.

How can I get a shipping quote?

Shipping quotes generate automatically once you add your address during checkout. Pallet orders ship LTL freight, and cost per pallet drops as quantity goes up.

Can I make a custom order?

Yes! Custom orders are always available. Just send us a message below with exactly what products you want, the quantity, and where it's going, and we will review and get you a quote.

How much apple wood do I need?

A 1.5 cubic foot box covers a weekend or two of cooking. A quarter cord pallet carries a backyard cook through a season. Restaurants should calculate their burn rate and order by the half cord pallet or truckload.
