OUR WOOD IS NATURALLY AGED

Our wood is naturally aged in the Texas sun, and prior to shipment, it is heat-treated to a minimum interior temperature of 160 degrees F for at least 75 minutes as outlined in USDA treatment schedule T314-c. All regulated wood products have been treated in accordance with Texas Compliance Agreement No TDA-538, TDA-534 & TDA-540.

FAQs

Is mesquite wood good for smoking?

Yes, with a light hand. Mesquite has the boldest flavor of any common barbecue wood, so it works best as part of the fire rather than all of it. Run it alongside oak on brisket and beef, and use less of it on chicken, pork, and turkey.

What does mesquite taste like?

Bold and earthy with a sharp, almost mineral finish. It is the most assertive smoke flavor in Texas barbecue. Used correctly, it gives beef a depth that no other wood produces. Used heavily, it turns bitter.

Is mesquite a hardwood?

It is, and a very dense one. Mesquite burns hotter than oak, hickory, or any fruit wood we carry, and it leaves a long-lasting coal bed that holds temperature well past the flame.

What kind of mesquite do you sell?

Mostly honey mesquite, with velvet mesquite mixed in depending on where the clearing job was. Both come off our own land clearing crews in Central and South Texas.

Is your wood aged or kiln dried?

All of our cooking wood is naturally aged and seasoned in the Texas sun, then heat treated to USDA specification before it ships. That means a minimum interior temperature of 160 degrees Fahrenheit for at least 75 minutes.

Can I use mesquite on a gas grill or charcoal grill?

Yes. On a charcoal grill, burn splits down to coals before cooking. On a gas grill, use mesquite wood chips in a foil pouch or smoker box on one burner. We also stock mesquite lump charcoal in our charcoal lineup.

Is mesquite good firewood?

It burns hot and long, which makes mesquite firewood good for outdoor fire pits. It does pop and throw sparks, so most people keep it outside rather than in an open indoor fireplace.

How much mesquite wood do I need?

A 1.5 cubic foot box covers several grill sessions. A quarter cord pallet carries a backyard cook through a season. Restaurants running mesquite daily should calculate their burn rate and order by the half cord pallet or the truckload.

How can I get a shipping quote?

Shipping quotes generate automatically once you add your address during checkout. Pallet orders ship LTL freight, and cost per pallet drops as quantity goes up.

Can I make a custom order?

Yes! Custom orders are always available. Just send us a message below with exactly what products you want, the quantity, and where it's going, and we will review and get you a quote.

Do you offer returns?

We have a no return policy; however, if you have received the wrong product, you have 30 days after receiving your item to request a refund. To start a return, you can contact us at sales@butlerwood.com. If your return is accepted, we'll send you a return shipping label, as well as instructions on how and where to send your package. Items sent back to us without first requesting a return will not be accepted.
